Machaerus: The modern village of Mukawer in Jordan, situated 30 km southwest of Madaba on the south bank of Wadi Zerqa Ma'in. The site consists of two distinct areas: the ruins of the fortress on the isolated spur of Qal'at al-Mishnaqa, and the ruins of the Roman-Byzantine village of Machaberous of it that is connected with the high plateau (Meyers,E. "The Oxford encyclopedia of Archaeology in the Near East" v. 3 (1997); p. 391.
